In an international context marked by increasing geopolitical tensions and ongoing conflicts, the role of telecommunications is becoming ever more evident as a strategic pillar not only for economic and technological development, but also for national security, resilience of critical infrastructures, and crisis management.

Communication networks represent a fundamental strategic infrastructure today, ensuring operational continuity, coordination between Institutions and Defense, as well as access to information for citizens and companies.

Within this scenario of profound digital transformation, driven by the growing integration of network infrastructures, artificial intelligence and satellite systems, the telecommunications sector is assuming an ever more central role in safeguarding technological sovereignty, industrial competitiveness, and national economic and security system.

Building on the experience gained from the previous seven editions of 5GItaly and 5G & Co., the event further evolves its format and vision, placing at its core the need to rethink the role of Telecommunications and Telecom operators within the new geopolitical context.

The event will be held on May 13, 2026, at Palazzo Wedekind, Piazza Colonna 366, Rome, an institutional venue at the heart of Italian political life, symbolising the dialogue between institutions, industry, and technological innovation.

The 2026 edition introduces a completely renewed format designed to foster direct dialogue among policy makers, institutional representatives, leading telecommunications companies, the defence and space industries, technology operators, and stakeholders within the digital ecosystem.

The Conference will begin at 2:30 pm with a series of in-depth sessions and discussion panels dedicated to the key strategic themes reshaping the future of networks and communication infrastructures. The event will conclude at 7:00 pm, followed by a networking aperitif on the terrace of Palazzo Wedekind, offering guests an exclusive opportunity for informal exchange until 10:00 pm.

This edition will address the main drivers of development in the Telecommunications sector, analysing the role of network infrastructures, digital platforms, and technology supply chains in a global context shaped by increasing geopolitical tensions. Alongside traditional topics related to networks and services, the event will also explore new frontiers in telecommunications, with particular focus on space, security of critical infrastructures, and the role of telecommunications in defence, areas that are increasingly interconnected and strategically relevant.

With the participation of political figures, institutional authorities, top executives from leading companies in the sector, representatives of the defence industry, and a strong presence of national and specialised media, Telecommunications of the Future 2026 aims to provide a high-level conference for discussion on the strategies that will guide the development of telecommunications in the coming years, both in Italy and across Europe.

Key Themes

  1. Telecommunications and AI: how artificial intelligence optimises network performance and enables the development of new digital services;
  2. Data Centres and Cloud – Italy and Europe’s Strategies: presentation of data regarding Italian municipalities and public administrations that have migrated to the Cloud using NRRP funding;
  3. Telecommunications Networks as Strategic Assets for Defence: telecommunications networks (5G, fibre optics, Edge Cloud, etc.), as critical infrastructures essential to defence, require, within the current geopolitical context, greater enhancement, protection, and classification as strategic assets for National Security, as other national entities operating in the Defence and Space sectors;
  4. Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Satellite Connectivity: competition or cooperation? Considering the growing adoption of satellite connectivity, it is essential to promote dialogue between terrestrial and satellite operators in order to identify effective solutions for reducing the digital divide and strengthening collective Defence. A European regulatory framework based on pragmatic criteria is also required;
  5. Digital Networks Act: strengths and areas for improvement;
  6. Radio Spectrum as a Scarce Resource to be Enhanced: rethinking national and European policies on radio and satellite spectrum considering the new geopolitical context;
  7. Copper Switch-Off: is this an objective that can be brought forward in order to accelerate the rollout of FTTH and to enable innovative services and critical applications?
